IT WAS 1998 and Peter Garrett, anti-nuclear crusader and rock singer, was performing at a uranium mining blockade inside Kakadu National Park.
Kerry Nettle, a young Sydney woman fresh out of university, was one of the volunteers behind the scenes, handling media queries and spruiking Garrett's role in the campaign.

THE BILLIONS of dollars in pledges showered on older Australians have failed to sway their vote and left them feeling embarrassed, says the leader of Australia's biggest seniors group.
"Their kids and grandkids say to them, 'Oh you oldies have got another handout'," says Everald Compton, chairman of the National Seniors Association.

ANTHONY ALBANESE is an ace at tennis. The Opposition spokesman for water and member for Grayndler in Sydney's inner west is a regular at the Marrickville Hardcourt Tennis Club, a club where community roots run deep.
The Saturday afternoon competition is made up of married couples, their children and even their grandchildren - families who have lived in the inner west for generations. In between sets, there's time for a beer, a smoke and a flutter on the pokies. The conversation is of local news, weddings and babies.

THE GREENS have emerged as the main threat to Environment Minister Malcolm Turnbull's future, with polling tracking the party's primary vote in his seat of Wentworth at a massive 20 per cent.
And in the adjoining seat of Kingsford Smith, Labor's environment spokesman Peter Garrett will be challenged by high-profile athlete Sue Mahony, who will be announced today as the Greens candidate.
The current voting intention in Wentworth - confirmed by Liberal and Labor sources - has the Greens nearly doubling its 2004 primary vote of 11percent.

“We are pleased to announce that Dr Ben Spies-Butcher was unanimously endorsed last night as the Greens candidate in the seat of Heffron for the 2007 State Election” said South Sydney Greens convenor Jenny Leong.
Ben is a founding member and Secretary of resident action group REDWatch and an active campaigner for rights based Aboriginal Reconciliation. He is a founding member of the ReconciliACTION Network which organised the 2005 Freedom Ride commemorating the 40th anniversary of the famous civil rights bus ride led by Dr Charles Perkins around NSW. He has a doctorate in economics and currently works in research and teaching roles at the University of Sydney, Macquarie University and the Edmund Rice Centre.
